Week 1: Foundations of Environmental Sustainability

Assignment:

  • Write a personal sustainability action plan (500 words)
  • Reflect on 3 SDGs most relevant to your community

Week 2: Environmental Health, Risks, and Justice

  • Human health risks from environmental exposure
  • Chemicals in consumer products
  • Environmental justice and equity
  • Public health and vulnerable communities

Hands-on Practice:

  • Activity: Analyze chemical labels of household/personal products using the EWG database: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
  • Tool: Risk assessment matrix (low/med/high risk vs. exposure/impact)

Assignment:

  • Conduct a mini environmental audit of your home or office
  • Identify 3 consumer products with harmful chemicals and suggest alternatives

Specimen:

Week 3: Circular Economy and Sustainable Strategy

Key Topics:

  • Introduction to circular economy
  • Life Cycle Thinking (LCT)
  • Corporate sustainability and ESG
  • Green product design and waste minimization

Hands-on Practice:

  • Activity: Conduct a life cycle analysis (LCA) of a plastic bottle or textile item

Assignment:

  • Redesign a product or service from your profession using circular economy principles
  • Present a one-page strategy for reducing waste in a small business

Week 4: Climate Leadership, Policy & Local Action

Key Topics:

  • Global climate governance (Paris Agreement, COP)
  • Localizing SDGs and climate policy
  • Leadership in sustainability (government, corporate, NGO)
  • Strategic planning and change-making

Hands-on Practice:

  • Activity: Design a climate action plan for your city/town or institution
  • Tool: Climate Action Toolkit by WWF: https://www.wwf.org.uk/get-involved/schools/climate-action-schools-toolkit

Assignment:

  • Final project: Develop a mini sustainability action project proposal (2-3 pages)
  • Present your strategy in a group presentation (virtual or in-person)
