Introduction                          

This certificate course is being initiated to train students of Political Science and International Relations in particular and students of social sciences in general to critically engage with contemporary issues, articulate their perspectives persuasively, and contribute to the public sphere through impactful op-eds. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding, structured writing, and practical exercises to enable students to publish their own pieces in reputable outlets.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Differentiate between academic writing and op-ed writing.
2. Identify and analyse the structure of published op-eds.
3. Prepare a submission-ready op-ed draft for newspapers or digital platforms.

1. Understanding the Op-Ed Form Topics: Purpose and audience; structure of an op-ed; choosing timely and relevant topics.
2.  Crafting the Argument Topics: Building a thesis statement; using evidence persuasively; clarity of argument.

Registration Criterion

The course will only take 15 to 20 students to ensure personalized feedback and quality
discussions. To be considered for this course, read the eligibility criterion.

• Only students beyond 3 rd semester can apply.
• This is open to all but students of Social Sciences will be preferred.
• Applicant will have to submit a short paragraph of 200 words explaining why he/she wants to join the course and what he/she hopes to achieve.
• Applicant will have to write a 250–300-word piece on a given topic “One issue in Pakistan that needs urgent public debate.”

• Selection will be based upon clarity of writing, ability to form an argument and their commitment for the course.
